T Level students from The Isle of Wight College have been gaining valuable NHS experience on placement with Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
The 11 students, three studying Digital and Business Administration T Levels and eight studying Heath T Levels, are all in their second year of college. The Health students have been working across mental health, Allied Health Professional and nursing fields at St Mary’s Hospital. The Digital and Business Administration students are placed with the hospital’s Digital Team, which spans seven different service areas.
Introduced in September 2020, T Levels are a vocational qualification aimed at 16–18-year-olds. Equivalent to three A Levels, they give young people the opportunity to gain work experience via a 45-day placement, complementing the learning they do in class. The placement can happen any time in a student’s second year and can be split into different blocks of time.
Tracey Knight, Learner Placement Manager & Trust T Level Project Lead, who led this work, says: “It’s been brilliant meeting the students and seeing them settle into their placements so well. T Levels present an exciting opportunity to grow our future workforce by investing in young people who have made a commitment to vocational learning. We look forward to offering placements for first year digital and business administration students from November.”
Emma Gotz, T Level Strategic Lead for the 350+ NHS Careers Programme, says: “It’s fantastic to see these opportunities being created for young people on the Island. One of the many great aspects about T Levels is that they are diverse; so, whether you’re a young person looking to purse a clinical career via Health T Level or a business-focused career via a Digital and Business Administration T Level, you can, and with so many diverse roles in the NHS, it’s a great place to grow a fantastic and extremely rewarding career. We’re continuing to work with colleges and our NHS colleagues to facilitate the uptake of T Level placements across the region.”
