T Level Celebration Week: Jessica’s NHS placement

T Level student Jessica from HSDC Havant & South Downs College is pictured here with NHS Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and 350+ NHS Careers specialist, Jen Williams. Jessica, who is in the second year of a Health and Nursing T Level, joined Jen for a visit to Southsea Infant School where Jessica observed Jen undertaking an assessment with a child.

The visit was part of a three-week placement with Solent NHS Trust’s Child and Family Service Line, which Jessica, 17, undertook at The Child Development Centre, Battenburg Avenue in Portsmouth. Talking about her experience, Jessica says: “I’ve had a brilliant time working with Jen and learning about the role of a Speech and Language Therapist. I hope one day to work with children in the NHS and I am keeping an open mind as to what career this will be,” says Jessica. The oldest of five girls, Jessica and has always enjoyed helping her mum look after her sisters. Caring for children comes naturally to Jessica and she can’t wait to continue her health career journey.

Having found reading difficult in school, Jessica really enjoys the practical aspect of the T Level course as this suits her learning style. Jessica hopes her next step will be a degree level apprenticeship.

Jen, who works with children and young people in her role within the 350+ NHS Careers Team and as a specialist Speech and Language Therapist for Solent NHS Trust, recommends T Levels, saying: “We are so excited about the opportunities T Levels offer to young people in gaining practical experience of the NHS environment. It’s been a real pleasure working with Jessica and I hope she has a brilliant time during the rest of her placement.”

Jessica is hosted on her placement by the Integrated Community Children’s Nursing Team, supported by Beth Willet and Vanessa Phelan as her placement mentors from this team. She got to spend time with other Physical Health teams as part of her placement, which arranged by Solent’s Adult Services Portsmouth team after being introduced to Jessica’s college by the 350+ NHS Careers T Level team.
